Bottom-hinged hopper-style doors are optimal for garbage chutes as they allow easy waste disposal while preventing spillage and litter overflow onto the floor. NFPA 82 dictates that the door’s area should be limited to one-third of the cross-sectional area for a square chute, or 44% for a round chute. Additionally, the force required to open the door leaf must not exceed 30 lbf (133 N).
